Am curious... Where have people mounted their fire extinguisher? And how have you done it? I've been thinking of fabricating a bracket for the front of the passenger seat, or maybe the rear parcel shelf. Anyone with experience here? Photos would be great! Thanks, Ross

Mine is not too fancy, it sits behind the passenger seat unmounted.

Unmounted as in unrestrained? It's a heavy item to have floating around the occupant space, it should really be tied down. Still, you are one better than me, since I haven't got around to buying one yet... I feel that a smallish CO2 extinguisher (2 or 3kg) should be fitted within easy reach for the driver, on the floor in front of the driver's seat is an option for cars with a higher seat, don't know if it will work for the JH. Has anyone mounted battery isolator switches and engine compartment extinguishers to their cars? -- Joachim

I also keep mine behind the passenger seat with no problems. It tucks down there, and with the seat slid back, it can't move any.

I used to keep mine there. Then one fine day while driving along with a friend through the Point Reyes National Seashore a cloud rose up in the passenger compartment. I quickly pulled over and, thinking the wiring was on fire, reached for the fire extinguisher. Then I saw the white powder on the back of the passenger seat. We laughed. It now lives in the glove box. Kurt

In my street driven J-H it's mounted sideways at the rear of the parcel shelf, easily grabbed by either driver or passenger. I used the plastic bracket that came with it. In my Spitfire Solo 1 car, it's mounted sideways at the rear of the passenger footwell, roughly even with the shifter. That way I can get to it easily with 5 point belts on. Thanks for the replies. I'm not a big fan of putting the extinguisher behind the seat -- seems it might be a little out of reach if you really needed it. Also, it's kind of hidden away there. I always thought a bright red or chrome extinguisher looked cool as well as served an important funtion. I run track days with the Porsche club, and they require it to be in plain sight and easy reach; bracketed as it sounds like the SCCA requires. That's the look I am going for. I've got some steel lying around in the basement, so I'm going to fabricate a bracket to fit where the seat rails attach to the seat. This should move with the seat and keep the extinguisher in one location with repect to the seat. I'll post some pictures and you guys can let me know what you think. Maybe it's unnecessary, but it's a good excuse to exercise my welding skills! ;-) Ross

So, here's how i attached the extinguisher: I used 16ga steel plate and 3/4" square tubing to make the bracket that the extinguisher bracket attaches to. I attached my bracket between the seat and seat track. Most of the peices are pop riveted together. But one piece uses a screw which makes it easier to remove and insert. Plastic caps on the end of the steel tubing make it look nice. Pros: I like that it places the extinguisher in easy reach and holds it very securely. It also uses none of the valuable storage space you may need for other items. Cons: It's really hard to reach the seat release to move the seat forward and back. For me, on the passenger seat, that's not a big deal since I can't remember the last time a passenger wanted to move the seat. Ross Attachment: DSCN5227.JPG (Downloaded 47 times)
