what's the scoop on the bumpers, i see some '74's with the square looking black bumpers and some with the more rounded stainless topped bumpers...the '74 i just bought to replace the one that burned has the stainless toppers ,ruined of  course by careless car haulers no doubt.  i have a friend who thinks he can make replacements so i may be o/k there, i just am interested to know when they changed the bumpers. all those who were of interest in the yellow cinder will be glad to know that it was sold to someone who will give it the much needed rebuild.

Click on "Jensen" in the list above. Then "Model Information" from the next list. Everything people always wanted to know but were afraid to ask is contained in the above links. Thanks again for the great website Greg!

I liked the looks of those square bumpers and bought a set. Then, I found out they weigh around 50lbs apiece, compared to, oh, about 10lbs for the old style bumpers. No way I want 50lbs stuck way out in front of my car as it'll serious affect turn in. might be good for accidents though. So, kept my old style bumpers and bought some spares.

Ron,

It's worse than that Ron!  The mountings are completely different for the 5mph crash bumpers than it is for the chrome pre-1975 bumpers.  Not an easy retrofit.

Didn't get that far - sold those things off before that!!!!

That is a lot of weight.  With those square bumpers one is adding around 100lbs of weight to a car that only weighs around 2200lbs.  Not only that, you are adding it in basically the two worst places you could - outside of sticking 100lbs vertically on a 5 ft pole and welding the pole in the center of the car with the weight at the top.

I'd daresay a "old bumpered" JH will do better with respect to handling than a square bumpered car, all other things being equal. I was amazed at the weight. I assume many cars of that area were similarly affected - I know the TR7/TR8 was with some huge bumpers, and I would imagine other low volume British cars as well.

well, i'm glad i found out about the weight etc. the thing already has the hiccups and the extra pull wouldn't help.

speaking of the hiccups, to take the distributor loose to adjust timing,  how do you get in there? i think the thing needs some adjustment...it's doggy, and backfires when cold, also the idle starts out spattery and as the engine warms up, it climbs to near 1500 rpm...any ideas?
