I know the beast was hit and maybe bottomed onto something due to repaired damage but I can push the shaft back into the firewall from below and the u-joint back into proper position as compared to my 76. Any ideas what got mushed?

From memory -The inside of the collapsible steering column consists of a square bar fitted internally to a square tube retained by two plastic pins. In an impact the plastic pins shear allowing the column to collapse. If you can not source new shear pins there are various alternative solutions such as garden strimmer filament or heavy gauge soft copper wire. The original plastic pins are pretty fragile.

Sound to me that the honey comb metal webbing that surrounds the central shaft has been compressed.

My first thought also but the whole shaft moves with the steering wheel. We shall see.

could be the end bearing housing at the steering wheel as well, does it drop a little when you pull it towards you, my shaft pin has been broken for years but I don't get any play, results may vary...……..

No flopping at the wheel that I can remember, but I have not tried that test yet.

Yup, Brett was correct and the webbing is collapsed but all there. Does anyone know if can be straightened and still kinda work?

If your on Face Book, put a post up in Jensen-Healey wanting a good used one, I'm sure someone in that group or even here has one for a good price. personally I would not recommend trying to cobble it back.

Is this Jay from Minnesota? I've got at least one extra column... more for you to look at when you visit, right?
