Hi all The Prince of Darkness reaches out again... In spite of replacing the alternator on my GT, my battery runs flat even after a long run in the countryside at speed. The temperature and fuel gauges also register zero, but the other gauges work. I can't recall where, but recall reading that a possible culprit might the voltage stabiliser. If so, it would be a relatively cheap and easy fix. Anyone else encountered this phenomenon?

chrisl, I'm not sure you can blame the Prince of Darkness might be the Prince of Years of Neglect. First what shape is your battery in and what is the voltmeter reading? Did both gauges fail at the same time? If so the voltage stabilizer replacement is a good option.

You are correct in that both the fuel & temp gauge run off the voltage stabilizer, located high uo in the back by the 2 gauges, The GROUND for it is the casing going through a sheet metal screw to the metal gauge panel back, which gets oxidized easily. Highly recommend gthe MOSS one which is solid state for the 10 volt output. As for the alternator, don't forget the light for the IGNITION , located in the bottom center of your center console panel, must be working! Keep us posted. bruce

Thanks all For a car that is almost half a century old, it runs extremely well. The voltage gauge did hover around 11 - 12v; typically it was around 14 - 15v. The battery and alternator are almost brand new and I've had no problems with these two gauges until now. They failed at the same time which made me think that it must be a component that they share. I'll order a new voltage stabiliser, and give the connections a good clean. I didn't know about the 'ignition' light; will check it tomorrow. Thanks again, watch this space.

Doesn’t help, but I have an odd problem. My charging system works fine according to the volt meter, but my ignition light doesn’t work. No it’s not the bulb !
