Hi

I am having problems with my rear brake binding.
I suspect that the problem is related to the assembly of the hand brake system.
On the attached drawing you can see the atachment points of spring no 21.
I suspect that it is mounted incorrectly as it seems to push the rear brake pad towards the drum.

anyone who knows where it should be attached?

Hi Barthol

In your diagram, the left hand side of the spring should be inserted in the hole in the left hand brake shoe which is up and to the left of the rectangular slot through which the hand brake mechanism lever protrudes. It is a very fiddly job to insert the spring - I found it can help to hold the hand brake lever at an angle with the spring attached in the correct place at both ends, and then twist the lever into position. This gives you more leverage over the spring.

To clarify, this means you assemble the hand brake lever to the left hand brake shoe before you fit the lever / brake shoe assembly to the brake backing plate. The spring is not attached to the backing plate. The attachment point of the right hand end of the spring, as shown in your diagram, is correct.

Our posts crossed in the internet ether...

I think, from memory, that the left hand side of spring 20 attaches to the same hole in the left hand brake shoe. But I may be mis-remembering as it's been a while since I stripped my drum brakes and they're not in the place where I'm staying at the moment. If not, it attaches to the hole immediately below the rectangular slot in the left hand brake shoe.

It should be easy enough to check - position the brake shoes correctly on the backing plate, and offer spring 20 up to the brake shoes. This spring is a bit of a stretch to position, but not too much.

Hi Nigel,

I guess that it must be the same hole as the spring 20.
using the lower hole will forse the spring 21 to slide against the caliper.

So I guess that the drawing now shows the right connection points:-)

Hi Kim

Yep, looks correct to me. You'll be able to tell for sure once you've assembled everything - if the springs are in the right place, everything will "look" aligned and in the right place.

Sorry, have just noticed that one of the orange arrows in your diagrams has moved! The right hand end of spring 21 should attach to the notch in the handbrake lever shown in the first diagram you posted, not the notch in the H shaped end of the lever, as shown in your second diagram. Hope this nmakes sense...

Just did my brakes, and yes, that spring was a bitch to get back into place. I assembled all the parts on the bench, and compared to the left side, (still intact) and could see how it all fit together. And yes, both springs do in the same hole. I did the e-brake spring first, and then the longer one that holds both shoes together.

Make sure the circlip holds the brake cylinder firmly to the backing plate (ie install a new circlip with the correct installation tool so it doesn't get distorted), otherwise the handbrake lever may disengage from the brake shoe web with use, and the handbrake will stop working properly. Don't ask me how I know!
