Has anyone out there fitted the stock JH4 Rear end with disc brakes? If so, what parts did you use and how did you do it?

Say, has anyone thought about swapping in the entire rear-end from a Volvo? I did and it is only 1/2 inch wider than the origional JH/ Vauxhal one; is a spicer 30 unit so is much stronger, has a limited slip dif from the factory, has the disk brakes standard equipment, has a emergency brake in the brake disk and weighs only slightly more than the stocker. Required some brackets be made and some careful welding, but was in in about a weekend.....just a thought. I also equiped the front spindles with Volvo hubs and disks; swapped out the master cylinder for a volvo and ended up with a easily obtained, really inexpensive, and superior brake system, even used 5 lug wheels which are readily available. If you can fabricate, it might be for you.

I think a lot of folks would be really interested in pictures and some more info on exactly what parts you used. It sounds like a very nice upgrade.

The Volvo rear end can be from really any late model 140-164-240 264-265 they are all essentially the same; just pick the final gear ratio you want. Mine is late model 265 from a station wagon just because I had it and it had the 3.31 ratio with posi, that I needed. Cost was about $ 40.00 for everything. I will shoot a set of pictures for all to see and probably write an article on the swap, soon.

Please do! Volvo parts are cheap and plentyful here in Norway, so this kind of conversion is exactly what I am looking for, at least. -- Joachim

Sounds good. Did you modify your drive shaft? How did the 3.31 ratio feel on the road? What size tire do you have now? How much did your RPM drop at freeway speeds, say 70 mph? I'm looking forward to any pictures, articles details that you can share! Thanks, Bill

New driveshaft needed, made my own, as have done many in the past. Final drive ratio with the 3.31 rearend and a 0.70 fifth gear from a T-5 trans= 2.38:1. Which cruise at really low rpms, getting very good mileage I hope. Not on the road yet.... too many details. Oh and sent some photos to Greg c/o JHPS, hope that he recieved them.
