the area on the distributor (aluminum) where the steel ring secures the distributor to the oil pump has fractured and can no longer be secured with the retaining ring. I had previously used JB Weld to hold these pieces together but it broke over the weekend. I knew it was on borrowed time when i put it together, but wanted to enjoy the car over the summer. Can the Moss 25D distributor for the MG be used, transplanting the guts from my distributor into the new body? Or can a later distributor body be used?

basically, yes(the 5 digit # stamped on the front may be different, but you will need to transfer the guts; might as well change the seal while you're in there) btw, I have MANY good used ones and I'm sure others do as well

On my first JH (14313) I was forever having the 25D pop out when I loosened to adjust the timing. It may have been because the skirt was already cracked, but anyway it finally broke completely. I took to a friendly machine shop and they cut away the aluminum skirt and replaced with a press fit steel sleeve. I asked them to add a very slight raised "catch" at the end. Just enough that the pinch clamp would catch and I could loosen the clamp and turn the distributor without having to worry about it popping out on me, which as you know makes for a bigger project. I could still remove the distributor by putting a flat screwdriver at the end of the clamp and twisting. Has anyone else done this?

I didn't add a lip but I do add a small turned steel ring into the gap between the edge and the main body so that it has something to clamp against. Seems to be working well. I might try that idea of just machining it all away and adding a larger steel ring, that would be probably the best thing. It's just an awful design in general, thought many times of doing something custom that had a tab that attached to the oil pump housing and another tab on the distributor and just bolt it together, similar to every other car company did with a brain.

That crack can be repaired permanently. Send it in to JHPS for a rebuild/recurve along with your bent clamp and it'll come back fully rebuilt and repaired, ready for another lifetime of service. Its an easy fix.
