Basic question.  I am trying to set the timing for my 2.0 with Stromborgs.  Chassis number 17020.  I find the directions in the manual confusing and would like some confirmation.  I am setting the timing with a timing light.  With the engine at 1000 rpm, I am at about 10 degrees btdc.  Is this correct and what should be the advances at various rpms?  All help appreciated.  thanks.

Disconnect the vacuum line at the manifold and cap the tap. The vacuum retard system retards the timing by 7 degrees IIRC. Most people leave this capped.

With the idle timing set at 10 degrees BTDC you should see 17 degrees of additional advance as you increase the rpm. At 2500 rpm the the mechanical advance will be maxed and you should see no further changes with additional rpm.

If the timing reads 10 degrees even with increased rpm then the mechanical advance weights are gummed up or rusted.

If the advance is slow to rise and keeps rising up to 4500 rpm then you have a distributor from a MGB.

What are you seeing?

Kurt

I checked the timing without disconnecting the vacuum.  I was alone and so I was guessing on the engine speed.  The timing is at 10 degrees btdc at 1000 rpms and advanced about 8 degrees when I advanced the rpms.  I would guess that the car was at 2000 to 2500.  The timing read about 18 btdc with the vacuum attached and with the car at about 2500 rpm.

by the way, what does IIRC mean?

IIRC ='s If I Recall Correctly.

I too live in Brooklyn Park just off Brookdale drive and Regent,  and have owned 18309 for 4 years now. We'll have to get together.  763-561-7998 John

Cool.  I am at 85th and the river.  thanks for the explanation of IIRC.  Perhaps my knowledge of modern vernacular is worse only than my knowledge of cars.

Hi all, I purchased 13599 last week and am still waiting on a service manual to arrive courtesy of ebay. My question is what mark on the timing cover is 0 degrees and what increments are the other marks?

can't get it to run without pinking and running on after turning key off. Should note distributor is 25D mechanical and bob weights are free. Also is it possible to have the gear drive out a tooth when previous owner changed timing belt? Any help and photos of marks would be a lifesaver, should mention i'm from Australia and not a lot of knowledge down here, other than Richard Calver who lives in my city and I have not met as yet.

Hi Terry,

Welcome to the board and congratulations on becoming the custodian of a Jensen Healey.

Fo help you might try joining the Jensen Car Club of Australia and I would certainly recommend giving Ross Hockley in Sydney a call on (02) 9938 1822 (web site at http://www.jensencarco.com.au). Ross is the go to man for parts and answers locally - although the club shop here is pretty good too.

Regards,

Ross.
