Never liked the look of the stock airbox (too Hooverish) and I didn't like the look of the K&Ns that the car came to me with. So I grabbed some spare aluminum sheet, some 5/16-18 button head screws, some trim, and a Subaru element from RockAuto and voila, for about $50 and a couple hours of time, I ended up with this . . . Looks nice; just wondering why the carb. tops are 90 degrees from where they would normally be?

I've only had the car for a few months and they were on it that way before I rebuilt them. I looked inside and didn't see how that position made a difference. The diaphragm tab is in the slot of the body.

If you pull the top off you will notice the 2 holes in the bottom of the piston; if they are closest to the butterfly, the response time for acceleration will be faster. You can "live" with the orientation in any of the 4 positions, but the response time (greatest "vacuum" or pressure differential) will be quickest in the 2 holes to the rear of the opening.

Thank you! As I was going to put in new needles tomorrow, I will put them back on in the correct direction.

I've been trying to track down a filter for a 73 Jensen Healey I just became caretaker for (I don't own it). Is this setup using the stock plate connecting to the ZS carbs? And you made the outside plate? Do you have the part number for the Subaru filter? Rock Auto knows me well, but still wants more from me.
