To all you experts, after about 3 years and vast amount of money my "Phoenix" is coming close to resurection. However my mechanic (a Lotus guy) tells me that one of the inner throttle shaft bushing is leaking air and causing popping. My questions are how common is this problem, what is the fix, and is there is a way to check if the shaft is twisted, as, from what i have read so far that is a fairly common problem. The problem carb also shows corrosion pitting inside, but before the butterfly, are there any fix for that and is it a problem? Thanks to all.

It's not uncommon on high mileage carbs. The fix to either replace the shaft or rebush the shaft or both depending on the type and amount of wear. At that point, you'd be well severed by getting the carbs rebuilt by someone that knows them and make sure nothing else is wrong. That said, I would still be extra sure that the jetting is spot on, which is a much more common problem on the JH.

Thanks for the information, would you have any suggestion for someone familiar with doing such rebuild in NorCal? FranciG

I'll call a friend. He is rebuilding a set and IIRC had the shafts chromed to bring them into tolerance. I'll find out where he's getting the work done. Kurt
