I have been eyeing the Supra 5 speed conversion offered in the marketplace. I know that W58s are easier to find in the US, but I note that the W55 has numerically higher ratios, possibly better for the 907. Would anyone who has converted to either box like to share some insight as to how s(he) likes the ratios and make a recomendation as to which box to look for? thurman

Mitch's information says it all; personally i chose the W58 as it was used in the Lotus Excel which has the 2.2L engine with higher compression, more BHP and torque then the JH 907. Since my new engine is a 2.2L now with over 210 BHP and around 180 ft/lbs of torque i felt the original 4sp might not be able to handle the new amount of horse power. the W55-58 can handle up to 300 BHP so more than adequate for my engine. I wanted a 5 speed for high way cruising. NOTE there are 5sp close ratio boxes available on request as well! meaning 5sp 1.00:1, which i love but cannot use for street purposes or rather my driving intentions. the W58 first gear's lower ratio will improve taking off from a dead stop and the 0.78:1 5th gear makes highway cruising ideal. I used to drive 120 KM/HR in 4th gear. At that speed my 2.0 907 engine runs at 4000 RPM and you know what that means :) .... lots of noise, which is fun but not after 30 minutes. So shift to the W58 5th and it will drop almost 1000rpm which is then still 3000 rpm the W55 might be a better choice for you, but it all depends on your engine and your driving. Good luck. You'll want to compare the W55 & W58 with the stock JH 4sp and 5sp ratios, and of course what engine modifications you've done. Another criteria is what kind of driving you'll be doing (Highway vs. City). The W58 is almost identical to the JH 4sp 2nd, 3rd, and of course 4th gear ratios. Ironicly, the JH4sp 1st gear is taller than the W58. Conversely, the W55 gears are all lower and wider requring more shifting around town. 5th gear is also a challenge. The W58 has a fairly tall 0.78 ratio which is pretty much useless in my 2.2 at speeds less than 70mph. For a bone-stock 907, the W55's 0.85 5th gear may be a better choice if you can live with the increased shifting in town. The best of both worlds is the W57 used in the Lotus Excel. The question is: Can the W55 5th gear set be installed into a W58?

Judson, the Lotus Excel was equipped with the W58, not the W57. My W58 came from a Lotus excel including bellhousing and all. Mitch's URL and its data is correct. I have no experience in driving with it as yet, so can't say how the 5sp actually is, but i believe indeed the 5th gear is pretty useless around or under 60mph (100 km/hr), but hey..i normally had NO 5th gear at all and had to drive in 4th all the time :) Driving in 4th (with the original 4sp gbox) around 70mph (120 km/hr) results in about 4000rpm. If i can shift to 5th around 65mph and 70mph then i'd VERY happy as rpm will drop to around 3000rpm or even below. may be the W57's 5th gear ratio is more ideal, but i think it depends on high way speed limits. Over here the high way speed limit is 70mph (=120 km/hr) and you don't want to drive slower then that. At this speed the 5th gear of the W58 is ideal. I think if your speed limit is 60 or 65 mph which i think it is in the US then the W57 5th gear would be more ideal, cause the W58 5th will drop around 2500 rpm or even lower correct?
