Guys, I recently bought a 1974 Jensen healey that was apparently somewhat restored (All new brakes, suspension and Weber carburetor conversion done with 45 dcoes) but the engine and tranny had low miles or so did the previous owner say. I bought it for $4k as it is and got the car running. However, the transmission is just stuck frozen shot. I took it to my Mercedes mechanic (Who knows not much about Jensen) and he knows a lot about transmission from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. He drained the fluid and showed me there was so much water mixed with oil that the tranny is shot. It is milk shake brown and there are metal chunks in the milk shake all over.
So he says to find a replacement 5 speed or a 4 speed. I really would like a replacement 5 speed. So i was led to this forum. If anyone has a spare to sell that is a known good one please let me know. I still have to address other issues after getting it running like replace all the brake hydraulics and the top etc.
Thanks again for any leads. Oh and one other thing, I don't know if there were other variants of the 5 speed or not but its the 5 speed where 1st gear is where a normal 2nd be on a regular car?? Sorry, my first Jensen. Not familiar with this stuff atall.

JenHeal,

Your best bet is probably Bruce Madden (Red Racer) he's in Georgia, Atlanta area I believe. He's got a lot of cars and parts and a lot of expertise.

The five speed is a Getrag "dog leg" 235 transmission, used in Jensen Healeys, Mercedes 190s, period BMWs (notably the BMW 2002) and others. It is called a "dog leg" because of the unconventional shift pattern.

They are all over the place on eBay so are not hard to find. What is difficult is to find someone who thinks they worth less than $3k. Lots of them are pulls and in unknown condition, and yet people think they are made of unobtanium. Sheesh.

A little patience will serve you well.

My point is that they are not hard to find. There are also parts on eBay if you wish to rebuild your 'box. Your call.

Vance
