The book says the engine need 20w50.  My regular mechanic recently expressed his opinion that a synthetic blend 10w30 is a better choice.  What's the word out there on oil options?

20-50 for a regular engine that has some miles on it, new engine break in is another matter.

As I've said before, and without mentioning names, I was advised by several people who were involved in the design of the 900 that the only modern oil to use is Castrol Rs, and never to use Mobil 1.

Sjensen, It's fun to learn about lubrication and the effect of viscosity on oil pressure and heat build-up. Your mechanic is technically correct but it's nothing to worry about for a street engine.

I use Valvoline VR1 20-50 which has the ZDDP and is available at my local auto parts store.

I also use VR1, and I haven't had any problems with the oil inside the engine so far.  My problem is all the VR1 I leave behind everywhere I go...
