I am in the process of stripping down a spare engine that I picked up, and I want to actually remove the cams. I have looked at the diagrams and read the service manual, but can't seem to find a good way to remove the rear cover and O ring to get to the retaining bolt. The two bolts that hold the cover on are out, but the cover won't budge, and I am a little afraid of applying much force to aluminum parts.

Has anyone found a good trick for this?

Thanks in advance.

Once the two short bolts are out you can rotate the retaining plate to expose the ears.  It is a tight fit and there is an o-ring adding resistance but some gentle tapping and alternating prying will get the cover off.  You can always tap on the cam nose and partially push the cam out the back for additional leverage.

Thanks. Worked like a champ. I couldn't get the cover to rotate, but a couple of taps on the front of the camshaft pushed the rear cover off enough to create a gap that I could work with.
