I have been in contact with Konig Wheels. They have indicated to me that they would be willing to do a run of thier "Rewind " style of wheel in 15x7, 4x4", 0 offset for about $100 each(not minilites or panasports, but close). The catch is that they have to do a run of 80 wheels in this dimension. Shouldn't be hard right? 20 cars not a problem? Let me know If there is any interest. Also I am looking for a set of steel bumpers from a "73 or a early " 74, mine are not repairable.

FWIW, attached is a photo for this wheel, taken from their online catalog.

Do they actually offer a choice in offsets, or is the 0" figure the only option?

Last year I was quoted a price of $45 a wheel just to blast the paint off my JH's factory wheels.  With that in mind, brand new 15" wheels at $100 each looks pretty attractive, if one is in the market for such things.  However, I'm not familiar with Konig.  Has anyone had experience with this brand?

UPDATE: Meant to say 0" offset but was thinking backspace and managed to seriously confuse myself.  Text above should now be correct.

Me too, although I'm skeptical about the $100. Konig is a long established and respected mid-range brand.

As I understand it, Panasports through Delta are an indefinite (and very long) wait at about twice the cost.

I have been researching a run of adaptors to allow the use of more common wheels, but the best cost I could come up with for a production run of 40 in 4 x 100 was $50 each, so 4" x 4" PCD wheels are ultimately a less expensive (and simpler/lighter) way to get 15s.

Could we make a short list of cool JH wheels in 15 x 7? i have seen this type of thread so often on the board.. I have also done some research, here is what i found that i thought was interesting for the JH.

Brands:

Panasport: http://www.panasport.com available through DMS and may be direct.  The wheel: FS 15 x 7. Weight: anyone? Quality: high. Looks: fabulous.

Konig: http://www.konigwheels.com. The wheel: Rewind 15 x 7 also available in silver. Weight: around 13.5 lbs (very light!) Quality: medium to high? Looks: good.

Superlite: http://www.superlite-wheels.com. The wheel: Classic Range 15 x 7 also available in silver. Weight: 18.87 lbs. Quality: high. Looks: ok/good.

one other unspoken top brand:

Compomotive: http://www.comp.co.uk. The wheel: ML1570 (15 x 7) also available in silver. weight: anyone? Quality: high. Looks: fabulous (see picture attached)

The Konig wheel looks good, is very light but that fact also raises questions regarding quality (strength), but it is also a lot cheaper and that counts too.

The Panasports and the Compomotives both look equally fabulous and are both expensive but top quality.  Anyone has other brands. Please do add weights and/or comments to the list.

thanks

erik

I,m intrested. What about lug nuts? Will they sell a steel lug nut to go with the wheel?

I'd be interested as well.  Are there any interference issues with the 15" wheel?

Hello,

I would certainly like a set. I do have some questions though:

- is the $100 each a guaranteed price?

- is the offset correct?

- will the Jensen lug nuts work?

- will there be any chassis/ fender interference?

- expected date of completion?

- made in USA? Hate that costly shipping from UK!

If you can answer these questions, count me in. How do we pay? I assume you will need a deposit?

Thanks for your efforts.

I did a Google search for "Konig Wheels" and among other things found a reference that a Miata driver had requested a special run for their vehicles and the price was about the same of $100 per wheel. There was a photo of one of the wheels in the shipping box. So I assume they had enough interest to to stamp them out for Miatas.

Hello,

When will we be appraised of this purchase? What are the numbers now? Can you answer any of my questions in a previous quote? Please respond. Thanks, Norm Vandal

At this point in time we have 5 possibles and 5 definites. We need at least 20 definites. I'll try to answer your questions as well as I can. Conical lug nuts fit the wheels, they are available from Konig. The wheels have a 4" backspace and 0 offset.  As far as clearance, I really don't know I don't believe there will be any problems, "Jasper" has said that he is using 15" wheels with no problems. Delivery time from the receipt of the deposit is anywhere from 60 to 90 days. The deposit is 50% of the total order and the wheels, all of them, can be only shipped to one location. They will have to be distributed from there. The $100 is not etched in stone, however I don't think it will vary much from that figure. I don't have a clue what shipping would be, inbound to the distribution point or outbound to the owners. A best guess on the outbound freight is + - $60. Now the sticky part; how to handle the financial end. Any thoughts on this would appreciated.

So what backspace and offset is found on the panasport wheels?
Anybody? Who can state that they have experience whith wheels and/or tires that did not fit (interference), and what size were the offenders?

Jim,

The stock offset is ~3/4"...my 6x13" Panasports had a measured offset of ~5/8".  I would assume the 6x15 Panasports would have the same offset as the 6x13s.

A 225/50R15 is about 0.8" wider than a 205/60R13...so the 7x15s need to have at least 0.4" less offset than the 6x13"Panasports in order to have the same inner clearance.

If you have 205/60R13s on your car now, just measure outward about 1" and that should be where the outer edge of the 225/50R15s would be.

My interest will probably go to a set of adaptors, if they're made in something like 4x100 the quantity of styles, size and brands  of wheels is stagering.

in the 4x100 format we can use 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and above sizes, from wire wheels to full moons and everything in between; that's the way I'll be leaning to; but that's just my opinion.

Just my 2 cents: Wheel adaptors are not all created equal. In a perfect world, you would use only a very high quality, hub centric, adaptor that is custom made for your car and wheel- that is the adaptor bolts onto your existing 4" pattern and the new wheel fits the adaptor wheel center precisely, but almost every wheel is different inside, so you can't really get a hub centric fit until you know which wheel you are using. Plus, these are expensive. Just sticking on generic spacers is ill advised- you'd be much better off with a wheel that fits your bolt pattern to start with.

I am seeing lots of messages about adapters and spacers.  It would require some amount of teardown but why not drill new stud holes on whatever bolt circle you desire?  Just rotate the hub or axle about 30 degrees or so, (in the machine) indicate the center, step to the new coordinates and drill.  The rear axle is OK but the front hubs would require a back spotface.  This method would accomodate the stock studs or a different dia and  any machine shop can do the job in 3-4 hrs.

If you look at the axel and hub flanges you will see they are thincker where bolt holes are drilled so redrilling them would result in a weakness in the flange.  Anyone who has seen their wheel and tire rolling down the highway knows it is not a good feeling.  Besides spacing the wheel and tire out 1" doesn't cause any interference problems and results in better performance as well as  looks.

While I strip back and polish the original wheels for my Jensen, I have the car on a set of old fashion steel wheels with chrome trim, kind of retro look. See attached photo

Actually Sport, if you will take a look at axel (axle) and hub flanges you will discover that there are no thinck (thick) spots at all.  The axle flange has been machined both sides to a constant thickness of .327".  The front hub has one side machined and one side as cast so the thickness, while constant, may vary within the casting tolerance allowed by Jensen: mine check .305".

Anyone,

It has been a few days and I have no feedback as to where we stand on a production run of wheels for the JH. I am looking to purchase new wheels for my JH and need some direction. I really do not want to wait a year for Panasports from Delta. Someone, please provide me some advise or direction.

Thanks,

Brad

I would love this to work out, but I'm not comfortable that this is going the way it should, it seems like too much guess work and not enough engineering. I would be interested if I heard that Konig would get in touch with a Jensen Healey owner local to them and state that they would fit the wheels to an actual car and guarantee that they would fit and work to spec. Even better, if this is the deal it looks like it might be, I would be willing to pay more to go through Delta and see a professional work this out with Konig. What about it Jim?

Dave

By the way, thanks Rob for the great leg work to get this started!

Waiting for Jim to read this thread may not be very practical. I'm sure he'd be happy to chat on the phone however. Look guys- you own a car that is considered pretty rare. If there's no money in it, why will someone spend the time to save you, the owner, a few bucks? Konig doesn't care about our problems and they certainly won't guarantee a wheel will fit our car if we give them the wrong specs.

A nobel task indeed, trying to get a group purchase together. The reality is that trying to get a group of Jensen owners to agree on anything is like herding cats. It can be gone, but it ain't easy. I'd even be interested in some of these wheels for my own car, but a run for 20 cars and owners with cash in hand? That will be a tough number to meet.

Delta will have Panasports in stock one of these days. Don't blame them for the back order- JH's are low on the priority list for Panasport.

the zero offset seems about right if the other information I have read is correct offset should be 1/4' or less  If the price is truley $100 per wheel I am in even if $125 per wheel it is a fair price and Konigs are very good wheels for the money.

ok guys

having read the posts in "tires" and "wheels"........thought i might add my 2 cents

the stock rim has a 3.5" backspace???........

there are some guys running 205/60/13 tires that measure 23"tall,7" tread width and 8" section width

i have installed 17" wheels on 2 british cars in the past(69 marcos and 74Tvr(see attatched).......with great results both visually and performance wise

so take a 205/40/17 tire ,it measures23.4" tall,7.4"T.W.and 8.6"S.W........the difference in measurements are negligible and you get superior handling and more readily available tires KUMHO ECSTA712 are $66 ea at tire rack.go one step further and put a 215 or 225/40 on the rear!!

is this a little too far out.........i don't think so ........i think the JH would look amazing with big wheels and lo-profile tires.......

PROS/CONS ?????!!!!

Does anybody want to try beating this dog again, or should we let sleeping dogs lie?

There has got to be 19 other owners needing/wanting new wheels. The cruising season is almost upon us (at least here in the Northeast), and the Panasports certainly are not getting any cheaper. What say you all.

I'm looking to put a set of these Superlite wheels  on #15851 when she's done. They will cost me around $120 (incl. shipping)  more than having the OEM rims stripped, painted and re-turned. I don't like the originals, they're ugly and don't compliment the car well. For the extra money I'd rather have what I like, keep one OEM rim for the spare (wrapped in a black bag of course) and sell the other 4 on Ebay to help recoupe some of the cost. Does anyone have any experience with these rims?

These rims come in numerous sizes and finishes. Check them out at:-

Just a note of caution, most (nearly all) worldwide auto manufactures have stopped shipping 13" wheels as original equipment.  As a result, with each successive model year, the market for 13" rubber gets smaller.  Result?  The selection of 13" performance tires gets smaller all the time.  Tire manufactures just have little incentive to make 13" tires.  I have some 13 X 7.5 rims and the choices are relatively few compared to the huge selection at sizes 15" and up.

If you have identified some interesting 13" tires, please post!

Thanks and good luck

for guys just looking for wider tires - 225-45/50-13 DO fit on the stock wheels with 5.5" rim width and the 13" Panasports with 6" rim width. Mean looking too, and with Hoosier tires the footprint is actually 235 to 245 since Hoosier always does that with their R compounds to help out the racers limited to a width, sort of built in cheating. If you want to put some on yYou have to go to a shop that is used to mouting race tires to mount them because it is a difficult thing to do and will lead to some cussing from your tire man. I'll post some pictures later of what the wheel/tire looks like.

Here is a shot from the rear of the 225 on the 13" Panasports. You could even go a little larger, but no larger tire will fit on the wheel, the 225s are a severe hassle. It'll be enough tire for a 2200lb car anyhow.

http://www.gt40s.com/images/jensen/reartire.JPG

And the tire itself on wheel. They are R compound tires, but work great on the street, just be really, really, really careful if it rains. However, one could run Toyo RA1s which have almost as much stick and do have some tred pattern, sort of.

http://www.gt40s.com/images/jensen/tire.JPG

And that lying on the background is a generic wheel spacer, 1/4" inch thick. Don't be afraid of using them - if those didn't exist or work then 1/2 the race cars running in SCCA would crash, burn, or the wheels would fly off. That doesn't happen and the spacers are great for getting a little extra track width or getting a wheel to fit right.  Since we suspect some henious understeer (push if you prefer) from the welded rear differential we are going for a bit of extra front track width to help out with that slightly.

Hi Ron,

looks FAB! i know you are not interested in the larger rims, but what would run or what do you think is possible on the JH? 15", 16" or 17" may be? (one of the guys in this thread puts 17" on)

other question: i see all kinds of bars and x-frame around the back axle. Can you tell us what they are for? You don't seem to be using the "traditional" sway bar DMS sells.

How are the billsteins? I have those too, but since i'm not yet back on the road i was wondering how they perform

good luck.

Personally, I would not go for larger wheels for my street or race car.  Why? Well, larger wheels are generally going to increase in diameter and numercally lowering your final drive - 3.75  to a 3.5 is not uncommon going up a few inches.  Acceleration suffers and the 907 needs torque multiplicaiton.  Badly.

Secondly, and this is a bigger reason, larger wheels means more weight, more unsprung weight, and the result is a much less sharper handling car.  I'd stick with as small as you can get away with and these little 13s, with Hoosier race tires, will generate in excess of well over 1g.  Heck, smallers ones, 205s, on Miatas at a little bit higher weight can generate over 1.1-1.2g on track.  I imagine the JH will do the same if I can get the nastyness of the welded diff tamed.

A standard sway bar won't do well in racing and we only have the modified one on there to offer some tunablity - we're hoping stiff as hell in the rear will result in some oversteer and counteract the push the welded diff will impart.  The other stuff you see is a panhard rod to locate the axle from side to side - there is nothing that really does this besides the four link in the JH and that is inadaquate.  You can see another picture here:

http://www.gt40s.com/images/jensen/diff.JPG

Pan hard comes across, is anchored to the frame, and makes sure the axle doesn't go left or right - reduces load on the lower trailing arms and mounts too, which is a good thing given how flimsy they are.

Just an FYI.

Called Delta yesterday and they are quoting $230.00 and 4 months delivery on 15x7 Panasports.  Looks like a great way to spend my Birthday and Christmas money.  I need to be very. very good this year.

Here is a website for Diamond Racing Wheels. The have strong light weight wheels in various diameters with 4x4 bolt pattern available. If you want a choice of wheels for your Jensen that favor function rather than fashion this is the place.

I saw some Superlites on Ebay with 13 mm offset I thought they had to be 3/4 in (19mm)

how do you do it colinw59  ?

Also, saw these, but am leery of buying used wheels, particularly magnesium. Great Looking Though, Tough looking color.

Has anyone considered the 14X6 Superlights as an upgrade to the stock wheels? They appear to come in 4X4 bolt pattern, 12mm+ offset. With a 205/60/14 tire they'd fill out the wheelwells like the stock 185/70/13. Comments, anyone? Thanks!

JH wheels look better than any of these and are light alloy to boot. Anyhow, most of these cars are pretty rare now or like the MG midget have 4 1/2" width.

WOW! 4.5"?? thats not much bigger than my mountain bike!

One thing about a list like this is that it doesn't give offset numbers either.

Just looking for a make/model vehicle that would interchange with a Jensen that a local wheel shop could actually have in the book and look up.

The Vega wheels do actually fit a JH, I removed the original JH wheels off a car and put on the steel Vega wheels to send the car to the crusher, no experience with the others.

The local wheel shop is called The Club Store. Just click on it and get some 15" Minilite style wheels that fit.

I always thought these would look good on a J-H. It's a VTO Retro 4, an American Racing Libre reproduction but sadly not available in 4x4" bolt circle.

Hahaha, we had some similar ones on one of our racecars a long time ago. When I got the JH those wheels came to mind, couldnt find them though. Then this weekend I was reading Classic Motorsports and bang saw an add in the back.

I think I am going to shoot for the polished on black, I was told they came in 4x4?

You may want to hit up Jim @ Delta. He distributes the VTO wheels and often has very good prices on them.

Cool, thanks Jody, I have a stinking suspicion that I may get them as an xmas b-day gift.....on the other hand it may be shirts and undies again. :P

Huh. VTO doesn't show a 4x4 bolt circle, but if they are available inthat pattern I might be trading my 14x6 Minilites in...

I got refurbished original wheels from Wheel Collision Center. I am returning my cores tomorrow in the same boxes the "new" ones came in. Check out their order number WCC1512 at http://www.wheelcollision.com Their picture is better than any I could take. Mine look every bit as good as the one pictured. I am in love with my J-H all over again.
