VIN # 13349 was merely the last of the Mark I JHs.  Production of the Mark II cars began with VIN # 13350 and continued until they stopped making JHs.  There aren't any missing numbers.  Your # 13394 is simply an early Mark II.

As to what you can do about Virginia's DMV, probably not much.  I guess you'll have to use their lazy-bureaucrat's-wrongheaded-approach VIN number in any dealings you have with them, and can use the car's real VIN when dealing with the real world.

Assigned you a new VIN? My JH is registered in VA, using its true 5 digit VIN. The cars VIN is what it is. Maybe you could suggest they put 12 zeros in front of it if they absoloutely need a 17 digit VIN? I didn't have to do that; VA DMV registered my car in 2002 with no problem at all. I suggest you go up the chain of command at your local DMV until you get someone who realizes the problems a randomly assigned VIN could cause you should you ever sell the car, or if you move and need to retitle it in another state.

Frontierman,

You should believe Mark for he knows of what he speaks. If you require further evidence please refer to Richard Calver's excellent website. http://www.users.bigpond.com/tfmuch/article_jh2.htm

Maybe if you purchase Richard's chassis data book which has the chassis details for nearly every Jensen made form 1936 onwards and take it in to them they may be more accommodating, I think Greg sells them in the store.

It list your car as white with black trim engine number B73.08.3772 completed on 08/09/73 and going to USA.

Good luck

Norm

The 17 digit VIN format is a relatively new thing.  It may simply be VA does not grant new Titles to cars exceding a certain age.  I ran into this problem in AL years ago.  They would register the car no problem, but wouldn't issue me a title.

You may want to say something to the effect:  "It is a classic/antique car" (maybe you'll get one of those cool license plates for free!).

BTW, the full VIN for your JH is 1110-13394.  The 1110 is simply Jensen Motor's manufacture ID#.  There were actually two more prefixes - 1120 and 1130.  The three correspond to different export destinations.

I sent an email to Richard Calver concerning data collection on surviving Jensens. He is still collecting data but not spending much time hunting it down. I propose we all post a short description of the current status of our JH's so Richard can access the data without wasting time hunting it down.

Data should include vin #, condition, engine #, and location.

Also list any parts cars and spare engine numbers.

Example:

JH 13148, good running condition, engine #B7306-3230 (swap), San Anselmo, California USA

Spare engines B7306-3280 and B7404-6951

Cheers,

Kurt Housh
