Lads: The moment has arrived, I got off my lazy butt and went back to working on Rusty. The TR8 kept me from working on the Healey for a variety of reasons. The master cylinder pooped out, and the pedal went to the floor. Yipe! Immediately upon installing the new master, the trunk stays took a dump and the trunk lid conked me on the head. Grrr. I tried some Nappa replacement struts, but they didn't fit, so I got some from TWS motors. Perfect fit. Then the relatives showed up for a few days, blah, blah, blah. But mostly I just got lazy. OK, I tried to start Rusty, but no joy. Some starter fluid got him to bark a couple times, but he wouldn't run. I retarded the timing and tried again. Still no joy. I blew compressed air though the fuel line to make certain that it was unobstructed. I then realized I was not hearing the fuel pump run - I had issues with it previously as it did not want to pressurize my fuel line, or so it seemed. I had disassembled it but nothing was amiss, so it went back together. Turns out I had tightened down the diaphragm so much that the pump would stall. Backing off the diaphragm tension solved that, and I had fuel pressure. Not so fast! When I got fuel pressure, I heard gushing fuel hitting the floor. Ack! As part of my previous diagnostic efforts I had disconnected the fuel line at the carbs. <mumble> So That got reconnected. Color me embarrassed. I now had an operating fuel pump, fuel pressure, and I was ready to try again. I used my remote starter switch so I could stop cranking if a random part decided to launch itself into orbit. Two seconds of cranking and Rusty came to life, shattering the tranquility of our neighborhood - Rusty does not yet have a muffler so he made some very loud but melodious noise. Yay! OK, I need a muffler and to dial in the timing and idle, then off to the DMV to get Rusty registered. No need for emissions testing, Rusty is a 1974 and is therefore exempt from visiting the EPA testing station. Stay tuned kiddies, for the further adventures of Rusty the car. To infinity and beyond!
