the input shaft for the diff should not move at all. That is the shaft with the pinion gear on it that had been carefully matched with the ring gear(which uses shims to get the proper meshing). An enormous problem I have seen with people replacing the front pinion seal is that they don't mark where the nut was(VERY IMPORTANT) and they go ahead and over torque the nut collapsing the "crush washer" and making slop between the pinion and ring gears.
